Lizards,
[NEWS FLASH: The 2010 Law Enforcement Torch Run is on Wed, May 26 (yes, in less than 36 hours) starting at 0900 at the Tom Green County Courthouse.}
Hope you had a great time this past weekend – sounded like the race ended up pretty good after a few raindrops! For those who have the Road Lizards Poker Chip, you can take them to “The Slice” (behind the old Hastings building on Sunset and Knickerbocker) – get a tea and a $4.99 sandwich for free if you give them the chip!
Tri season – first and foremost, for those beginners, Pat Barton, an experienced triathlete, is hosting a 7-week Tri training/teaching sessions at Mary Lee Park. The first session is on Wed at 6PM and goes every week covering the basics in starting a training plan, the 3 disciplines and tips and techniques to get you through you first tri, or to refresh you on the basics. Come on out and learn a little—and did I say it is free??
Our next big run, and the capstone event for the Road Lizards, is the Run in the Sun on 12 Jun – sign up early online or at the EXPO hosted by Community Health Club the day prior…and everyone, pick up you race packets at the EXPO. It is looking to be an interesting event – Randy’s Bike & Run is planning to have a massive shoe sale with about 50% off top of the line running shoes, just to name one vendor there. More later.
And don’t forget! For something different, mark your calendars for The ULTRA Loco Lizard Adventure Race on 6 Jun, and yes, that is a Sun!
Try using the online sign-up!
Mike

Some Lizards are participating in the Relay for Life on Fri night – come out and support them if you have a few free moments.
This Sat—we have our second Chips Road Race #2 – 1M, 5K and 10K races – at the State Park. And just to clear the air one more time, it is on the road, not a trail run…the State Park has some great road runs out there and we have laid out three great courses. Hint: those unique SARL participation chips you receive are worth something. Ruthie will explain at the race!!!!!
VOLUNTEERS needed, as always. I’ll be gone this weekend (niece’s graduation) so Ruthie and Boyd will run the show. We need about 5-6 people for scoring at the end of the races, so if you can’t run, come out and help … and we can always use folks to help pre-registration move along.
Don’t forget the Loco Lizard Adventure Race on Sun, 6 Jun– it looks to be an exciting race with well over 30 teams already!!
RUN IN THE SUN 2010 8K TX Championship and Fitness EXPO, Fri-Sat, 11-12 Jun – our next road race is our buggest and is panning out to be a real good one! Be there on Sat, 12 Jun! Let's get a lot of support for it and for the EXPO the day prior. Plan to sign-up early online if you can to help prepare the chip timing (and save a few dollars). ALL – try to pick-up your packets on 11 Jun at the Community Health Club between 1-8PM as you visit the Run in the Sun EXPO. We have a number of interesting events and the EXPO tables are filling up quick, but I have worked with Community Health to have a few left over for SARL members if you have a product or service that would support the fitness/outdoor theme of the expo. Let me know as soon as you can if you are interested.
We have a few tables left over, so if you are interested, then email me.
- 22 May, Sat: SARL Chips Run, San Angelo State Park (ROAD race). This is the second in a series of road (only) races at the State Park. Solid, relatively flat road course you can race several times over to see how your PRs improve over the year. Free admission to the park -- we have a 10K, 5K, and 1 mile run – your choice. See roadlizards.org for the flyer.

After a year off, we have the Critter Crawl hosted by the San Angelo Nature Center (by Mary Lee Park) is back this Sat. Come on out, if not for the 9AM 5K, then get the kids out for the 9:30 youth trail, or best yet, the 9:45 Critter Crawl. Don’t know what all will be there, but any pet is welcome…and then walk through the Nature Center. Yes, we can all use some volunteers!
The ASU Physical Therapy 3M and 1.5 M fun run last Sat was a great hit—what a professional job done by the ASU Physical Therapy students.
15 May -- Please consider hitting the Art Museum at 9AM to help support the Diabetes Walk along the River Trail. Dawn and several physical therapists will be out there with their patients and they could really use the moral support.
The Chips Run is on 22 May—and mark your calendars for The ULTRA Loco Lizard Adventure Race (sign up online, it is filling up quickly)…and everyone plan to make the Run in the Sun 2010 8K. This is our capstone event for the year and it looks to be good. We are heavily working on an EXPO/packet pick-up the day prior plus the chip timing will make it a first-class race (not that our others aren’t first class!).
One last note…we are looking for volunteers to help teach basic triathlon – I believe Nick can help with the swimming, but are their some of you tri-athletes that would like to help? I have the training plan from last year and all it takes is about an hour a week for 6 weeks. Let us know.
NOTE: explore our online registration, it saves you money (or at most the same cost at day-of registration)…and helps us better prepare for the races.
- 8 May, Sat: Critter Crawl. Yes! It is back with 3 different course lengths. Come out to enjoy the San Angelo Nature Center by Nary lee Park. See roadlizards.org for more info. AND, don’t forget to bring your favorite pet for the Critter Crawl after the race.
- 15 May, Diabetes Walk at the river park. We will meet in the parking lot at the Art Museum down by the water @ 0900, did you have anyone from the Road Lizards that was interested in coming to join us? I was really hoping that some of them would be very motivational for the pt’s. Thank you so much for all your help. Dawn Empey RNC; Shannon Medical Center; Community Diabetes Project; 325-659-7285

Thanks for the volunteers for the YMCA Kidz Tri. What a blast. And for those that did not make it, the Back to School 7K in EOLA turned out great. It was a challenging course and great BBQ afterwards. Even saw a few buy a gallon of homegrown beer to take home.
UPDATE on the Metro Planning Org (MPO) work to improve our cycling and running trails. I sat down with them for a few hours last week and they are working hard to help. There is actually some pretty neat plans for running trails in the future. Until then, we need to get heard. TASK: I am passing to them the common running routes for them to add to the maps…they will also develop nice handouts for each one. Please send me your favorite routes (picture, word picture, or however) and I will forward to them. Expect to see a link on the website soon to view them.
NEXT UP, is the ASU Physical Therapy 3M and 1.5 M fun run benefitting the Pink Ribbon Foundation. Come on out and support! Many other races are just around the corner. Good times at Austin this weekend. Perfect race weather and a great course! I highly recommend it for next year. We’ll have to work on the pre-race pictures…it didn’t work too well this time, though you can check Sarah’s pic on SARL facebook.
Get ready—the best and final trail race this weekend. The SHANNON MEDICAL CENTER TRAIL SERIES RACE #3 completes the series with the 8AM start at the State Park pavilion. Randy Rangel has set up the 15K, 5K shortcourse and a KIDS’ RACE. Check out https://event-manager.compete-at.com/Manager/club/home.do?clubcntxt=sanangeloroadlizards for online registration. According to Randy and several who have pre-run the course—it is not OK, it is FANTASTIC. See you on Sat morning…no fee to enter the park, SARL has you covered. The race and series winners’ prizes will be awarded.
Info on the KIDS’ RACE – ages 14 and under, 2 age divisions and starting about 9:30 with a 1 mile trail run. Kids will be watched while you run…if you can’t make it early, bring the kids out about 9AM.
As always, we can use volunteers. Let us know if you can help – drop me or Ruthie a note and we’ll appreciate your help.
NOTES FROM OUT AND ABOUT (show our colors---wear your SARL T at the races! Or better yet, go as a group!)

Another great trail race last Sat….seems like they are getting better each week. Kudos out to Ruthie for running the show. Our VOLUNTEERS’ support was even better this week—it made all the logistics of running the race move smoothly. Thanks to Melissa Dunlap, Maria Antocci, John & DeeAnna Woiton, Laurel Scott, Ashley Gay, Randy Rangel, Mars Torres, Jeff Lisson, Matt Edwards, and Ric Fagan. It takes a lot to make these races happen…thanks again. Also coming up just around the corner are a few races that will need a race director—much simpler than a trail race—start thinking about which one you would like to direct (and I’ll help, so you won’t be alone).
SHANNON TRAIL SERIES RACE #3—15K, 5K and kid’s run—is getting marked today/tomorrow by Randy Rangel. LOCATION: STATE PARK, South entrance at the Chaparral Pavailion. Standby and I’ll try to scrape up a map before the weekend so you can find it and practice it…. If you haven’t run a trail race yet; this is the one NOT to miss. Sign up at: https://event-manager.compete-at.com/Manager/club/home.do?clubcntxt=sanangeloroadlizards .
There are 53+ folks going to AUSTION MARATHON/HALF-MARATHON. Search San Angelo at: http://www.active.com/search_reg.cfm?SR_ID=25848&MODE=search&EVENT_ID=1740332&CHECKSSO=0 to see all of us. Austin runners – plan to meet in front of the Radisson near the start line at 6:30AM to see if we can get a group picture. Wear your SARL T-shirt!

We could always use a few more volunteers -- if you aren't running this Sat at the trail race, we can use your help....especially at 8:45AM when the racers start coming in. If you would like to help, please give Ruthie a shout out on the SARL Facebook or email us at sanangeloroadlizards@gmail.com.
Great first trail series race, but it cannot happen without volunteer support. Our thanks have to go out to the sponsor, Shannon Medical Center, as well as the volunteers who helped make it happen on race day: Sarah Fly, Ashley Gay, Jeff Lisson, Jeanette Passons, Ben Passons, Mars Torres, Kelli Soria, Anke White, Scott White, Kyle Olsen, Terry Shaner, Nick Mathers – all earned a free race registration for a SARL race of your choice.
The 12K and 5K trail is marked…but a little long. It should be ready to pre-run after tomorrow. Go out the Middle Concho Park back gate, enter the third opening on your left (about 125 yards down) and keep the yellow & black caution markers on your right.
YES, we will run on Sat…it was muddy yesterday, do it should be a little muddy…but that just makes it a lot more fun.
If you haven’t signed up for races 2 & 3, go to https://event-manager.compete-at.com/Manager/club/home.do?clubcntxt=sanangeloroadlizards to pre-register: Shannon Medical Center Trail Series Race #2. That way you are guaranteed a race T-shirt, as well as a chance to compete in the overall trail series competitions!
Can’t compete? Wrong! We decided to modify overall series race scoring so that you can compete even with one bad race. As you run at least 2 of the races but, you must sign up for all three. Here is the way we are now scoring the overall and age division winners:
- Awards based on your best results of TWO out of the three races. Yes, you are not out of the running yet if you had a bad first race. Tiebreaker will be based on best finish in the 15K, then 12K, then 10K.
- Also, based on the great participation, we are splitting a few age divisions.

On Saturday, 23 Jan, we start the annual trail running series with the Shannon Medical Center Trail Series Race #1. Folks who have run the course say it is one of the best they have run – come on out and make your own determination on Saturday. It looks to be FUN—forecast weather is 41 degrees at the start with a few showers in the area and some wind…and it should warm up nicely while you are out on the trail (a high of 68 degrees is forecast). Yes, the race will go, rain or shine!
West Texas Running Club's next club race will be Feb 13th, a 14K(loop) and 4 mile at Texas Boys Ranch in Lubbock. Visit http://wtrc.tripod.com for details, maps and directions.

8 May 2009 update:
Don't forget about the San Angelo AIDS Foundation 5K (9 May), the RRCA Texas State
Championship Vita Sports Run in the Sun 8K (16 May), and the USMC
Bulldog Run 10K (13 June). All of the road races have shorter
distance "fun runs" associated with the longer events. Click on the
links to the left for flyers and on-line registration links
Due to a clerical oversight on my part we temporarily lost our P.O. Box
downtown for about a week. We have it back. However, they
took all of the mail in the box (about two weeks worth) and returned it
to the senders (address unknown, no such number, no such zone).
So, if you did get something returned to you (membership
application, RIS registration), please resend, annotate on your
paperwork that it's a resend, and we'll give you a $1 off of your
next race.
19 Apr 2009 update:
Results
from the ASU Physical Therapy Department's Rock Out Run have been uploaded.
Don't you hate it when NASCAR drivers thank all of their sponsors after
winning a big race? Me too...
On a completely unrelated topic, four of
us Lizards just got back from the Steamboat Half Marathon in Abilene. It was a
pretty tough little run with lots of hills and wind. It made me really
hungry... Julio's hungry...
I'm also probably going to be pretty sore tomorrow. I could benefit from a
therapeutic massage at Vita Sports Studio.
Additionally, I wore out my running shoes, so I should probably head over to Randy's Bike and Run Shop and get a new pair.
We have a
flyer for the Spillway Hill Duathlon now which will be a joint venture
between the Road Lizards, the San Angelo Bicyling Association, and ASU Fit.
This race is always a blast! I know for a fact that this is one of veteran
Road Lizard Bill Montgomery's favorite events. I'm also going to take
this opportunity to call out new Road Lizard and Ford Ranger fan Jeff Wohlrab.
Jeff is a good friend of mine who recently took up running. He's a prime
example of the amazing changes that can occur in a brief time when transitioning
from a non-running, online gamer obsessed with the movie Tron to a runner. Just compare
pictures of Jeff before he joined the Road Lizards and new runner Jeff and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about.
Jeff, you can borrow my back-up mountain bike for this event. Pre-register
using the flyer via snail mail, or get all crazy technologically advanced and
register on-line. Contact race director Bill Cullins ( email) for
information.
Remember
to register for the San Angelo Road Lizards 37th Annual Vita Sports Run in the
Sun RRCA Texas 8K State Championship Race and 1-Mile Fitness Run/Walk ( flyer
/ on-line).
Got kids? Come out to Catch a Fit
Life!, a free ASU Fit -sponsored event. They'll be hosting a number of local
organizations associated with youth fitness and recreation (to include SARL)
which will take place on 7 May.
We have more new flyers for upcoming
events on the site. Just look over there <------ (I got tired of making
links).
28 Feb 2009 update:
BREAKING
NEWS!
The 2009 Run in the Sun has been named the RRCA Texas State 8K
Championship for the third consecutive year! (See RRCA Rep Letter)
The event will consist of an 8K and associated 1K fitness run/walk
and will take place on 16 May. Registration (on-line and mail in) will
open on 1 March. Sign up early to save money!
Unfortunately,
the ASU Nursing 5K scheduled to take place on 7 March is a no-go.
However, we have a great race the following weekend, the Green River Rat Run 5K/1K.
Also, here is a link to a local multisport running/biking forum. It's a useful place to link up together and discuss group runs, training, etc.
Thanks
to everyone who came out for our 2009 Trail Series! We had a
total of 299 runners for the three events/six races. Check out
all of the pictures here. Also, we have the individual results here, and I'll be posting the overall standings after we've tabulated them.
PLEASE, if I've messed your name up on any of the results, let me
know and I'll fix them in the next update. Unfortunately,
clerical errors tend to be made during the mad rush of registration
(which explains why the fictional runner "Benjamin PASSIONS" appears in
quite a few race result reports, and why we had a runner named "Toe
Rez" compete in the Resolution Run Half Marathon).
We have two great regional half marathons coming up this spring. The first is the highly-anticipated Shannon Shamrock Run (Half Marathon and 5-miler) on 21 March which will offer a unique
opportunity to run the usually Ford F-150 choked streets of San Angelo
in a vehicular-free environment. The very next weekend our good
friends in the Abilene Runners Club will be hosting the Steamboat Mountain Challenge Half Marathon (online reg).
If you aren't up for 13.1 miles, there is a two-person relay
option. If you are interested in carpooling please let me know
ASAP (bpassons@angelo.edu).
If we have enough people and enough interest, we can even look
into renting a van and making an official SARL roadtrip out of it.

Distance: 3-7 miles
OR
Skip the running part and just show up at 404 Club around 6PM.
Anyone is welcome to join! Remeber, this will start next Friday, February
20th. This would be a great opportunity to loosen up for the FINAL TRAIL RACE
on Saturday the 21st. The culmination of the trail series is the 15k/5k,
Saturday the 21st. Registration starts at 0815, as usual. Each race has had 100+
participants, so get in line early for race day registration!

Again, we've uploaded the flyer for the Green River Rat Run 5K and 1K Run and Walk (formerly just the "River Run"). Race director, and former SARL
President, Terry Shaner, mentioned something about stuffed rats as
awards and "Irish refreshments" for post-race consumption. Your guess
is as good as mine!
Jan 2009 update:
If you weren't one of the 95
participants in yesterday's first trail series race, then you missed a good one! Sure, it was
cold. Sure, it was windy on top of that hill. Sure, a few people got lost.
Hey, that's what makes a good trail race, right? Click here for some pictures (dang, we're a good-looking bunch of runners!) I've also
posted the results in the...wait for it....results section!
Crazy, huh?
The annual meeting minutes have been
posted here (Reports and Meetings link above) . I've also added the
projected/almost certain to change at least twenty times 2009 calendar (see the
link to the left). Also, the "Club Officers" page has been updated with our new
officers and new volunteer positions for 2009.
Remember, we still have two more races
to go in our Trail Running
Series. You
do NOT want to miss these races. The courses are tough, but doable for pretty
much any level of runner - we've added a 5K to each race.
Additionally, we've uploaded the flyer

We expect a combined
running/biking/multisport forum to start on Bill Cullins's new web site in the
near future. It will be a great place to plan group runs, talk training, or
just chat and get to know other runners in the Concho Valley. I'll post the
link as soon as it's
ready.
Sep 2008 update:
WOW. It's been a busy summer. I'll let the numbers speak for themselves:
USMC Bulldog Run - 133 participants
Run in the Sun Texas State 8K Championship - 186 participants
ECVFD Stop, Drop, and Roll Run - 71 participants
Lake Nasworthy Sprint Triathlon - 101 participants
Southland Shuffle - 57 participants
Hot Dog Run - approximately 100 participants
Way to represent, San Angelo! Be sure to check out the results page for all of the races above. Also, when I have a few hours to
spare, I plan on adding a photo section for these four and other races.
If you have any good ones you'd like to see on the site, just
send them to me at bpassons@angelo.edu.
You can register for the Habitat for Humanity 5K/1M online now.
You can register for the Armydillo Run online now.
18 June 2008 update:
First
of all, I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the Run in the
Sun. The event was an outstanding success! We had 142
finishers in the 8K and 46 finishers in the 1-Mile event. Between
the Run in the Sun and the USMC Bulldog Run, we've had over 300 runners
partiicipate in SARL events in the past two months! Results have
been uploaded (see the Race Results link above).
I'd
personally like to thank the good people at the East Concho Volunteer
Fire Department for their services at the Run in the Sun. I don't
know if anyone noticed or not, but the San Angelo Police Department was
a no show at our event, despite our having a permit and a guarantee of
police closure of the busy intersections. If we had not had
Dennis Thompson and the rest of the fire fighters, we might have had to
cancel the event.
So, If you'd like to pay back the ECVFD for everything they do for our organization, make sure and pre-register for the Stop, Drop and Roll 5 Mile and 1 Mile Fun Run on 12 July.
Depite the best of intentions, I have yet to tabulate the 2008 Grand
Prix series data and upload it to the website. I plan on blocking
off about a 4-hour period next weekend and working on it. Look
for a the link by Sunday, 22 June.
Email me at bpassons@angelo.edu for any questions regarding SARL, running events in the San Angelo area, or if you just want to say "Hey, what's up?"
6 April 2008 update:
Breaking News!
The Run in the Sun has been designated the Texas
State 8K Championship for the second consecutive year! See the
official announcement from the Road Runners Club of America, North
Texas rep, here.
Older News
Bill Cullins, Kay Thompson and
Terry Shaner have been awarded Road Runners Club of
America's National Volunteer Award Certificates.
"The success of the RRCA and its clubs and events is based on
volunteerism. Since its inception in 1958, the RRCA has relied on the spirit of
volunteers to carry out programs, find sponsors, hand out water, work finish
lines and many other necessary and important tasks. It is in recognition of
these volunteers that the RRCA developed the Volunteer Award Certificates.
Without volunteers our clubs and events would not be as successful at promoting
grassroots running. "
This quote covers what the award represents. Over the years, they have done all this and much more.
Talk about representing...this
continues to be a big year for the 35th Annual Run in the Sun 8km run.
It is the longest continuously held 8km race in Texas; it was the Texas
State 8km Championship Race; it was reported in the September issue of Footnotes,
the RRCA National Magazine, and most recently, nominated for RRCA
race
of the year. (Although our chance of winning against the big city races
is very small, the nomination is a considerable achievement.)
We continue to take renewal/new memberships for 2008. Please send your
renewal or new membership form and check to SARL, P.O. BOX 2851, San
Angelo, TX 76902. (If you sent in your renewal or joined in October, then you are good
for 2008.) Thank you, to everyone that has already mailed in your
renewal. You can also join/renew at our annual meeting (details). We need your membership to keep the club active.
I encourage the
internet/e-mail membership option. This option gets you the
newsletter first and in color. You also get updates from RRCA.
Plus, it saves the club money.
Lastly, the Team San Angelo website and newsletter will be shutting
down effective December 31, 2007. Bill Cullins put in a tremendous
amount of work keeping us informed on multi-sport opportunities. Bill's
