Run in the Sun 8k selected as 2008 RRCA Texas State 8K Championship

The San Angelo Road Lizards annual summer race Run in the Sun 8K being held on Saturday, June 14, 2008, has two special distinctions. The event is the longest running 8K race in the state of Texas and it is the Road Runners Club of America TX State 8K Championship.

Since 1958, the RRCA has awarded championship events through a competitive bidding process at the National, Regional, and State level. The goal of the RRCA Championship Events is to help the host club recruit top performing runners, attract sponsors, and improve civic and media support. A championship designation communicates to athletes and the community that the race organizers have agreed to follow approved (race) guidelines in the conduct of the event.

The San Angelo Road Lizards were awarded the championship status for the second year in a row based on their commitment to the RRCA mission of promoting long distance running as a competitive sport and as a healthful exercise and their history of putting on well-organized, fun, safe and accurate races.  The 2007 Run in the Sun was nominated for the national RRCA Road Race of the Year award.  According to Kelly Richards, the RRCA State Representative for Texas, a race’s reputation in the community is a big factor when deciding which race should receive the RRCA Championship race distinction.  The San Angelo Road Lizards should be proud of the recognition a State Championship status indicates, for the average runner a Championship race means increased excitement and additional benefits, and for the elite runner a chance to gain wider recognition.

Runners and walkers of all speeds and abilities are encouraged to participate in the Run in the Sun 8K RRCA TX State Championship.  For more information about Run in the Sun 8K go to: www.Roadlizards.org.
